Solid precipitation measurement in Rikubetsu in the northern Japan
Sub-Title
Data Summary
An experimental observatory was built in Rikubetsu (43.5N, 143.8E) in the northern Japan in 2011 to construct a method for observing precipitation in Antarctica, and have continued to conduct observations. In general, the measurement of snowfall (solid precipitation) is quite problematic, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) organized an international project titled the "Solid Precipitation Intercomparison Experiment (SPICE)" during the winters of 2013-2016. We participated in the SPICE project with the observation in Rikubetsu. The knowledge obtained from the experimental observations in Rikubetsu are currently used for conducting precipitation observations at Syowa Station (69.0S, 39.6E), Antarctica, and for processing the observed data. The observational data in Rikubetsu not only provide opportunities for analysis of instrument performance, etc., but over a decade of data has been valuable as an indicator of climate change in a warming world.
