General information on archived data (metadata)

in portal server involving polar sciences

The National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) has been served as one of the National Antarctic Data Center (NADC) under the umbrella of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) of the International Council for Science (ICSU). During the International Polar Year program (IPY 2007-2008), the NIPR achieved a significant number of polar data from Japanese endorsed projects . In this portal server, several kind of metadata of the scientific data involving polar activities by Japan are compilted.

A tight linkage and sincere supports have been given by many global science bodies under ICSU, such as SCAR, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC), the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), and the new World Data System (WDS). The NIPR has the significant task to archive and deliver the data obtained from polar regions. Summary information of all the archived data (metadata) are available from this portal server to all involving polar community, together with more general interests by public domain.

Compiled metadata by the NIPR treat various science disciplines (space and upper atmospheric science, meteorology and glaciology, geoscience and bioscience) from both long-term from the International Geophysical Year (IGY 1957-1958) and short-term projects in the Arctic and Antarctic, particularly the data collected by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE). In NIPR science metadata portal server (http://scidbase.nipr.ac.jp/), over 350 records have been accumulated as of August 2016 including the data from IPY projects. The NIPR metadata portal server has also a tight connection with the Antarctic and Arctic Master Directories (AMDs) in the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD), the Polar Information Commons (PIC) established at the IPY.
